The Little Foxes

In a small Southern town at the turn of the twentieth century, the Hubbard family schemes to bring a Chicago industrialist to build cotton mills locally. Regina Giddens, once a Hubbard and now married to a well-off banker, Horace, wants the profit this deal would bring. Her brothers, Oscar and Ben, also need capital and approach her for help. Horace refuses to take part, and the family's ambitions turn to acquiring the money by other means, including stock certificates belonging to him. Regina's determination to secure her own position drives a wedge through her household, leaving her daughter, Alexandra, to seek warmth outside her mother's calculations.

William Wyler directed the film, the eighth of the twenty-two features listed in his career, following The Letter and preceding Mrs. Miniver. Lillian Hellman adapted her own play for the screen, and Samuel Goldwyn and Herman Shumlin produced for RKO Radio Pictures. Bette Davis leads the cast as Regina, with Herbert Marshall as Horace, Teresa Wright as Alexandra, Richard Carlson as David Hewitt, Dan Duryea as Leo Hubbard and Patricia Collinge as Birdie Hubbard, among twenty-four credited performers.
