Short description
Set in the 1970s, the film follows Gru as a twelve-year-old living in the suburbs, dreaming of becoming a supervillain and idolising a group of villains called the Vicious 6. When the group expels its leader, Gru sees a chance to join and presents himself as a candidate, but the meeting goes badly and he ends up on the wrong side of the gang. With the Minions at his side, he sets about building a lair, testing weapons and carrying out his first missions, while the villains pursue him.
Kyle Balda directs this animated entry, which follows his earlier work on Minions and Despicable Me 3. Steve Carell returns as the voice of Gru, with Pierre Coffin voicing the Minions; Alan Arkin, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh and Julie Andrews are also in the cast. Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay, and Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud produced for Universal Pictures and Illumination.
Released in 2022, the film runs 87 minutes and took about 940 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 80 million, a return that reflects its broad international draw. It holds a 6.5 rating on IMDb from roughly 104,000 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from far fewer votes, while critics gave it 6 out of 10 across 185 reviews.
