Short description

Brett Ridgeman, a veteran detective, and his younger partner Anthony Lurasetti work in a city where their aggressive methods have finally caught up with them. When footage of one of their arrests spreads through the media, both men are suspended. Ridgeman, who needs money to move his family out of a rundown neighbourhood, and Lurasetti, who is planning to marry, have no other income to fall back on. They decide to put their knowledge of the criminal world to use for themselves, and set their sights on a man they believe is preparing a major score, following him without fully understanding what he is planning.

S. Craig Zahler wrote and directed the film, his third feature after Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99. Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn lead the cast as the two suspended officers, with Tory Kittles, Michael Jai White, Jennifer Carpenter and Don Johnson among the supporting players. The production had a budget of about 15 million dollars and was made across the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

The film runs 159 minutes and sits within the action, crime and thriller genres. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from roughly 62,000 votes, while on TMDB it scores 6.6 from a much smaller base of about 1,170 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 153 reviews places it broadly in line with how general audiences have received it.

What's left behind the scenes

  • While working with Mel Gibson on the historical war drama “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016), Vince Vaughn showed him the script for this film and highly praised its writer and director, S. Craig Zaler. Gibson liked the material very much and immediately agreed to work with Zaler.
