Trog
Short description
A group of explorers discovers a prehistoric apeman living in a hidden cave, a creature that could be the missing link between humans and earlier primates. The anthropologist Dr. Brockton has the being captured and names him Trog, then works to understand and tame him through experiments. Her efforts to protect and study him run into opposition from a local developer, Sam Murdock, whose hostility sets off a chain of events that sends the creature fleeing into the surrounding area in a panic.
The film is a British production directed by Freddie Francis, working from a screenplay by Aben Kandel and produced by Herman Cohen. It came in the middle of Francis's run of horror pictures, between Dracula Has Risen from the Grave and Tales from the Crypt. Joan Crawford stars as Dr. Brockton, heading a cast that includes Michael Gough as Murdock, Bernard Kay, Kim Braden and David Griffin.
Released in October 1970, Trog runs just over an hour and a half. Audience response has been tepid: on IMDb it holds a rating of 4 out of 10 from roughly 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.6 out of 10 from a much smaller group of 44 voters. The film belongs to the horror and science fiction genres.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to director Freddie Francis and producer Herman Cohen, working with Joan Crawford was not easy: the once-in-demand actress often drank vodka, which she herself brought to the set in England, and was not always able to remember her lines.
- The worn monkey suit was obtained by the filmmakers from the set of "2001: A Space Odyssey".
