Baron Frankenstein continues his experiments with the transfer of souls, aiming to preserve the spirit after death. In a village, Hans, the son of an executed murderer, is in love with Christina, the landlord's daughter, whose scarred face and deformed body have left her isolated. When Christina's father is killed by three wealthy young men, suspicion falls on Hans, who is condemned and executed. Christina drowns herself in grief. Frankenstein and Dr. Hertz, his associate, recover both bodies and place Hans's soul into Christina's restored body. The experiment succeeds, but the revived woman is driven by Hans's desire for vengeance against those responsible for his death.
Terence Fisher directed this Hammer Film Productions release, working from a screenplay by Anthony Hinds and producing with Anthony Nelson Keys. It is the thirteenth of the sixteen films Fisher directed in chronological order, arriving between Island of Terror and Night of the Big Heat. Peter Cushing plays Baron Frankenstein, a role he had inhabited across several Hammer productions, with Susan Denberg as Christina, Thorley Walters as Dr. Hertz, and Robert Morris as Hans.
The film runs 92 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from around 6,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from roughly 151 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 across 13 reviews places it close to those audience figures, suggesting a similar overall assessment.
