Mr. Arkadin
Short description
Gregory Arkadin is a wealthy and powerful man who says he cannot remember anything about his life before the late 1920s. He hires Guy Van Stratten, an American with a criminal past, to travel the world and trace the people who knew him in those missing years. As Van Stratten gathers information about Arkadin's origins, the witnesses he seeks begin to die, and the question of what Arkadin is really after becomes harder to answer. Patricia Medina, Akim Tamiroff, Grégoire Aslan, Jack Watling and Mischa Auer appear alongside Welles, whose Arkadin keeps his daughter close in a mansion on the Riviera.
Orson Welles directed, wrote the screenplay and produced with Louis Dolivet. The film was made in Spain, France and Switzerland and runs 107 minutes. It followed Othello (1951) as the seventh of the twelve features Welles directed, arriving before Touch of Evil (1958). On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.8 from roughly 200 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Until recently, the version owned by Corinth Films was considered the closest to Orson Welles’ (1915-1985) vision. In April 2006, a DVD set was released with three versions of the film: the version held by Corinth Films, the so-called “European version,” and a recently edited “complete version.” Each version contains footage or lines that are not present in the other two versions. During post-production, the film was taken from the director, so it is now unknown what he meant when he spoke about the film later on.
- Shortly after the film's premiere, Maurice Bessy (1910-1993) wrote a novel based on it, "Mr. Arkadin"; Orson Welles is credited as the author, although he did not write a single line.
