Gideon's Day follows a single working day in the life of George Gideon, a senior Scotland Yard inspector. It begins badly when a young constable hands him a traffic ticket, and the hours that follow bring a series of problems at once: a trusted detective is suspected of taking bribes, a violent man is being hunted across London, a teenage girl is wanted in connection with a payroll robbery, and a bank raid has to be stopped. Gideon also has domestic plans he is determined to keep, including attending a concert given by his daughter Sally. The film is set in London and was adapted from one of the Gideon novels written by J. J. Marric.
John Ford directed the film, the twenty-second of the thirty-one features he made, arriving between The Last Hurrah and The Horse Soldiers. Jack Hawkins plays Gideon, with Anna Lee as his wife Kate and Anna Massey as their daughter Sally. The cast also includes Andrew Ray, Dianne Foster and Cyril Cusack, among twenty-nine credited performers. T. E. B. Clarke wrote the screenplay, and Michael Killanin produced it for Columbia British Productions.
The film runs ninety-one minutes and mixes crime, drama and comedy. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 1,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from a much smaller group of thirty-two votes, so the two audiences are broadly in agreement about it.
