During the Second World War, a British agent travelling to Washington with a secret document is abducted before he can deliver it. The British government turns to Sherlock Holmes, who heads for the American capital with Doctor Watson to track the missing man and the information he was carrying, and to keep it out of enemy hands.
Basil Rathbone plays Holmes and Nigel Bruce plays Watson, with Marjorie Lord, Henry Daniell, George Zucco and John Archer among the credited cast of twenty-three. Roy William Neill directed and produced the film for Universal Pictures, working from a screenplay by Bertram Millhauser and Lynn Riggs. It followed his Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, both from 1942 and 1943 respectively, and came before later entries in the series such as The House of Fear and The Woman in Green.
The film runs seventy-one minutes and mixes mystery and thriller material with the wartime setting. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from eighty-eight votes, a moderate score for a film of its age and a sign of continued but limited interest. It remains one of several 1940s Universal productions pairing Rathbone and Bruce as the detective and his friend and chronicler.
