Die Sünderin

Die Sünderin follows Marina, a young woman who grows up in a broken home and drifts into prostitution. She eventually finds genuine love and stability with Alexander, a struggling painter. Their happiness is threatened when a brain tumour puts Alexander's sight at risk, and only an expensive operation can help him. Marina faces a difficult choice about how far she will go to save the man she loves.

The film was directed by Willi Forst, working from a screenplay he wrote with Gerhard Menzel and Georg Marischka. It was released in January 1951 and runs 87 minutes. Hildegard Knef plays Marina, with Gustav Fröhlich as Alexander and Änne Bruck as Marina's mother. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from 454 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.7 from 12 votes. The story centres on the relationship between a prostitute and an artist, and the film was among the first German productions to address subjects then considered taboo, including nudity, suicide and euthanasia. Its release in 1950s Germany drew strong negative reactions from politicians and the Roman Catholic Church, and the resulting controversy led to a ban and a public scandal, which in turn gave the film a lasting place in cinema history.
