Short description
The Girl in the Spider's Web follows hacker Lisbeth Salander as she is drawn into a case involving a stolen computer program capable of accessing nuclear weapons. When the programmer who created it turns to her for help, she finds herself pursued by the National Security Agency and by a criminal network with its own interest in the software. Salander seeks out journalist Mikael Blomkvist, whom she has not seen for some time, and the two become caught between intelligence agents, cybercriminals and corrupt officials.
The film is based on David Lagercrantz's novel, a continuation of the Millennium series originally created by Stieg Larsson, and was directed by Fede Álvarez, following his earlier films Evil Dead and Don't Breathe. Claire Foy plays Salander and Sverrir Gudnason plays Blomkvist, with supporting roles from LaKeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks, Stephen Merchant and Christopher Convery. The screenplay was written by Steven Knight, Jay Basu and Álvarez.
Released in October 2018, the film carried a budget of 43 million dollars and returned about 35 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 55,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.2 from roughly 1,565 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 from 236 reviews places it below the audience scores. Álvarez went on to direct Alien: Romulus in 2024.
What's left behind the scenes
- Stieg Larsson (1954-2004) planned to write 10 books about Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, and his notes are kept by his civil partner and public figure Eva Gabrielsson, with whom Larsson lived from 1974 until his death. Their marriage was never officially registered, so Larsson's father and brother own the rights to his literary legacy. The Larssons and Gabrielsson were never able to reach an agreement regarding future books, and the Larsson family hired another writer. This film is based on the novel of the same name – the fourth book in the series and the first not written by the late Stieg Larsson.
- The film takes place in Stockholm, and Claire Foy speaks with a Swedish accent, which she developed with the help of the same specialist who helped her with the accent in the series “The Crown” (2016).
- Director Federico Álvarez wanted to shoot the stunts “live,” meaning without computer graphics. For example, in the car and snow stunt, a car was used with a driver sitting on the roof, while an actor pretending to drive sat at the wheel.
- Before Claire Foy was cast as Lisbeth Salander, negotiations were held with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. The same actresses were also in negotiations before filming the previous film. In addition, Sony Pictures Entertainment considered offering the role of Lisbeth to Felicity Jones and Alicia Vikander.
