Short description
Margaret is a drama about Lisa Cohen, a seventeen-year-old high school student in New York. After a bus accident leaves a woman dead, Lisa becomes convinced that she played a part in causing it. Her efforts to make things right are met with resistance from the people around her, and her frustration turns outward toward her family, her friends and her teachers, and inward toward herself. What she confronts is the distance between the ideals of youth and the compromises of adult life.
Kenneth Lonergan wrote and directed the film, his second feature after You Can Count on Me and the one preceding Manchester by the Sea. Anna Paquin leads the cast as Lisa, with J. Smith-Cameron as her mother Joan, Mark Ruffalo as the bus driver Maretti, Jeannie Berlin as Emily, Jean Reno as Ramon and Sarah Steele as Becky. Sydney Pollack, Scott Rudin and Gary Gilbert produced, and the credited cast and crew together run to the low two hundreds. Made for 14 million USD, the film runs 150 minutes.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 350 votes, a modest figure that reflects a limited but engaged response to a long, character-driven drama.

- When Fox Searchlight Pictures and producer Gary Gilbert refused to continue funding the film during post-production, demanding that it finally be released, Kenneth Lonergan turned to his childhood friend, actor Matthew Broderick, and borrowed money from him to complete the project.
- Filming took place from September 12 to November 23, 2005, but the premiere did not occur until six years later, on September 30, 2011.
- The film's premiere was planned for 2007, but director and screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan became embroiled in disputes with Fox Searchlight Pictures over the final cut of the movie (which lasted another four years). These disputes resulted in several lawsuits.
