Short description
Legends of the Fall is a family saga set in early twentieth-century Montana, where retired cavalry colonel William Ludlow raises his three sons on a remote ranch in the Rocky Mountains. The brothers are very different in temperament: Alfred is cautious, Tristan is wild and headstrong, and Samuel is the youngest. Samuel returns from his studies with a fiancée, Susannah, and her arrival changes the household, as both of his brothers also fall for her. When the First World War breaks out, the three brothers go to Europe to fight, and the family begins to come apart. The story follows the Ludlows over roughly two decades.
Edward Zwick directed, working from a screenplay by William D. Wittliff and Susan Shilliday; Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz and Wittliff produced. The film was released in December 1994. It came fourth in Zwick's filmography, after About Last Night... and Glory, and before Courage Under Fire and later titles such as The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond. Brad Pitt plays Tristan, with Anthony Hopkins as Colonel Ludlow, Aidan Quinn as Alfred, Julia Ormond as Susannah, Henry Thomas as Samuel and Karina Lombard as Isabel Two; the credited cast numbers 27, with 100 credited crew.
Made for a budget of 30 million dollars, the film took about 161 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from around 199,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4/10 from roughly 3,000 votes, indicating broad approval from viewers. A film critics' rating of 6.4/10 from 61 reviews puts professional assessments noticeably below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene where Henry Thomas's character dies, he has blood on his left cheek, but in subsequent shots it sometimes disappears and then reappears.
- The film is based on Jim Harrison's novel “Legends of the Fall” (1979).
- Calgary, Canada was chosen as the filming location, hoping for a lack of rain, but it started raining as soon as filming began.
- The word "fall" in the film's title means not only "autumn" but also directly alludes to the biblical "fall from grace." Meanwhile, in a number of countries (including Russia, in particular), a similar idiom was not found and the title was translated directly – as "Legends of the Fall."
- During the filming of the scene where Karina Lombard's character is shot and Tristan, played by Brad Pitt, is beaten by a police officer, the actor portraying the officer went overboard with the baton and left Pitt with a black eye. Shortly after, filming moved to the tennis match scene at the beginning of the film, and lines had to be added to the script to explain Pitt's bruise.
- Johnny Depp was considered for the role of Tristan.
- It took director and producer Edward Zwick 17 years to bring the project to the filming stage.
- According to Brad Pitt, he was originally supposed to play Tristan Ludlow in old age in the epilogue, and was even made up accordingly, but the result did not satisfy anyone. That's why Doug Seuss, a bear trainer (of Bart the bear), played the role instead.
