Renato and Albin have shared their lives for years above the nightclub they run, where Albin performs in drag under the name Zaza. Their routine is disrupted when Laurent, Renato's son from an earlier relationship with a woman, arrives with news that he is engaged to the daughter of a conservative politician. When her parents come to dinner, Renato joins his son in presenting a respectable front, and Albin is asked to stay out of sight.
Édouard Molinaro directed this Italian-French comedy, working from a screenplay he wrote with Jean Poiret and Francis Veber; Poiret's play provides the source. It came after Molinaro's A Pain in an Ass and before the sequel La Cage aux Folles II. Ugo Tognazzi plays Renato and Michel Serrault plays Albin, with Claire Maurier, Rémi Laurent, Carmen Scarpitta and Benny Luke among the twenty-two credited cast.
Made for about one million dollars, the film took roughly twenty million worldwide, a wide return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around thirteen thousand votes and on TMDB 6.8 from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 7.6 from twenty-four reviews places it slightly above the audience scores recorded on IMDb and TMDB.
