Hell Drivers follows Tom Yately, a man just out of prison who takes a job as a haulage driver for Hawlett Trucking, a firm whose business practices are far from honest. Pay is tied to the number of loads delivered, and the drivers are pushed to cover ground at reckless speeds. Tom soon befriends Gino Rossi, an Italian former prisoner of war, and Lucy, the company secretary, but clashes with Red, the outfit's leading driver, who holds the record for trips completed. What begins as rivalry over the job turns into a dangerous contest on the road.
Cy Endfield directed and co-wrote the film with John Kruse; Benjamin Fisz produced it for The Rank Organisation. It was Endfield's first feature as director in the listed chronology, ahead of Mysterious Island and Zulu. Stanley Baker heads the cast as Tom, with Herbert Lom, Peggy Cummins, Patrick McGoohan and William Hartnell among the twenty-two credited players. The English provincial setting and the working lives of the drivers give the crime story its texture.
On IMDb the film holds a 7.2 rating from roughly 4,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller sample of 69. A critics' rating of 6.8 from six reviews places professional assessments close to the audience scores.
