Set in rural Louisiana in 1962, Eve's Bayou centers on the Batiste family, led by Louis, a well-liked doctor, and his wife Roz. Their ten-year-old daughter Eve adores her father, but her view of him changes when she witnesses one of his affairs with a female patient. Unable to accept what she has seen, she turns to her older sister Cisely for answers, and when that fails she seeks out a woman who practices voodoo. Her search for the truth puts the family's carefully kept secrets under strain and unsettles the household for good.
Kasi Lemmons wrote the screenplay and made the film her directing debut, the first of six features she has directed, followed by The Caveman's Valentine, Talk to Me, Black Nativity, Harriet and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Louis, produced alongside Caldecot Chubb. Jurnee Smollett plays Eve, with Meagan Good as Cisely, Lynn Whitfield as Roz, Debbi Morgan as Mozelle Batiste Delacroix and Jake Smollett as Poe. The production had a budget of about 6 million dollars and took roughly 15 million dollars worldwide.
Critics rated the film 7.5 out of 10 across 134 reviews, higher than the audience scores of 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 13,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes.
