Tom and Huck

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, two boys living along the Mississippi River, witness a killing in the town graveyard one night and swear to keep quiet about what they saw. When an innocent man is charged with the crime, Tom faces a choice between the promise he made to his friend and telling the truth to save a man he believes is blameless. Their attempts to settle the matter draw them into further trouble.

The film comes from Walt Disney Pictures and was directed by Peter Hewitt, arriving between Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and The Borrowers in his filmography. David Loughery and Stephen Sommers wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Tom and Brad Renfro as Huck, with Eric Schweig as Injun Joe, Charles Rocket, Amy Wright and Michael McShane among the credited performers.

Released in December 1995, the film took in about 24 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a studio family release. Audiences have been lukewarm on it: it sits at 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 12,000 votes and 5.3 out of 10 on TMDB, while a small sample of critics rated it lower, at 4.2 out of 10.
