The Little Stranger

In the summer after the Second World War, Dr. Faraday is called to Hundreds Hall, a Georgian country house in rural Warwickshire where his mother once worked as a servant. The estate has belonged to the Ayres family for generations but has fallen into disrepair. Faraday tends to Roderick Ayres, a young man struggling after his wartime service, and grows close to Roderick's sister Caroline and their widowed mother. As strange events unsettle the household, Faraday becomes increasingly involved with the family and the house itself.

Lenny Abrahamson directed, following Garage, Frank and Room; Lucinda Coxon wrote the screenplay. Domhnall Gleeson plays Faraday, with Ruth Wilson as Caroline, Will Poulter as Roderick and Charlotte Rampling as Mrs. Ayres. The film is a co-production between the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and France, and it was released in 2018.

The film drew modest audiences, taking about 2 million dollars worldwide, and audience scores are lukewarm: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 143 reviews places reviewers somewhat above those audience responses.
