Short description

John Wick is on the run. Having killed a member of the High Table inside the Continental Hotel, he has broken the one rule that protected him, and he is declared excommunicado: cut off from the services the assassins' world provides and marked for death. A fourteen-million-dollar contract is placed on his head, and killers from around the world take up the hunt. With a head start measured in minutes, he has to fight his way out of New York City and find somewhere to go. Among the few people who might still help him are Sofia, an old acquaintance, and the woman who once raised and protected him.

Chad Stahelski directed the film, the third entry in the series he has directed, following John Wick in 2014 and John Wick: Chapter 2 in 2017; a fourth followed in 2023. Derek Kolstad, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams wrote the screenplay. Keanu Reeves returns as the title character, joined by Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos and Asia Kate Dillon, among a credited cast of thirty-six and a crew of ninety-four.

Made for about fifty-five million dollars, the film took roughly three hundred twenty-eight million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from around 477,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 out of 10 from about 12,000 votes, while critics' reviews average 7.5 out of 10 across 358 notices, placing professional and audience assessments closely together.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The word "Parabellum" in the film's title is taken from the Latin phrase "Si vis pacem, para bellum," which translates as "If you want peace, prepare for war." It is also the name of a 9mm caliber handgun.
  • John Wick uses Glock 34 and STI 2011 pistols.
  • "Continental" externally is the so-called "Cocoa Exchange," located at the intersection of Wall Street, Pearl Street, and Beaver Street. The building is also known as Beaver Building.
  • $4 million was spent on the construction of the glass structure where John Wick fights two opponents.
  • During filming, Halle Berry also worked as a dog trainer.
  • To bond with the dogs, Halle Berry worked with them for three hours a day, four days a week.
  • The title of the third film in the franchise comes from the Latin expression “Si vis pacem, para bellum” or “If you want peace, prepare for war.” The phrase appears three times in the film: it is tattooed on the back of a ballerina at the beginning, written on the door of a bus near the hotel, and later spoken by Winston (played by Ian McShane).
  • Five dogs depicted the two dogs of Sofia. They were trained by Andrew Simpson, who trained wolves for the series “Game of Thrones” (2011-2019). The dogs were trained in a special form of martial arts developed for the film by Chad Stahelski.
  • When John Wick pierces Zero with a saber for the last time, Zero is lying on the floor, therefore the saber cannot pass completely through his body. However, when Zero rises to his knees, the saber protrudes from his back by 15-20 centimeters.
  • Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Tiger Chen, and Randall Duk Kim starred in the films of the “Matrix” franchise. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick films (2014, 2017, 2019), was a martial arts coordinator and stunt double for Keanu Reeves in the “Matrix” trilogy.
  • Filming took place from May 5th to November 17th, 2018.
  • Halle Berry broke three ribs while filming.
  • The judge has the word “einfhlung” tattooed on his neck. Translated from German, it means “empathy”.
  • The book featured in the library scene is a collection of Russian folk tales by Alexander Afanasyev (1826-1871). It contains the earliest known recorded tales of Baba Yaga, who is constantly referenced in the films of this franchise.
  • Jennifer Beals, Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Uma Thurman, and Marisa Tomei were at various times considered for the role of Sophia.
  • Lance Reddick has appeared in all films in the franchise, but this is the first time he is referred to by name.
