Troll Hunter
Short description
A group of Norwegian film students sets out to make a documentary about a suspected bear poacher, only to find that the man they are following, Hans, hunts something far larger and stranger. The trail of dead bears leads them into a remote northern landscape where the creatures of folklore turn out to be real, and where the students gradually come to suspect that the authorities know more about these animals than they admit. Shot in a found-footage style, the film follows the group as they accompany Hans on his hazardous work and learn that the truth has been kept out of public view.
Troll Hunter was directed and written by André Øvredal and released in 2010, the second of the seven features he has directed to date, following Customer Support the previous year. Otto Jespersen plays Hans, with Glenn Erland Tosterud, Johanna Mørck, Tomas Alf Larsen, Hans Morten Hansen and Urmila Berg-Domaas as the students and officials caught up in the hunt. John M. Jacobsen and Sveinung Golimo produced the Norwegian production for Filmkameratene, FilmFondet Fuzz and SF Norge.
Made for around 20 million USD, the film returned roughly 4 million USD worldwide, a modest theatrical result. Audiences have received it favourably, with a rating of 6.9 from about 83,000 votes on IMDb and 6.7 from around 1,800 votes on TMDB. Its critics' score of 6.7 from 110 reviews sits close to the audience verdict, suggesting general agreement about the film's blend of fantasy, horror and deadpan humour.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Thomas asks his friends if he looks like a famous painting, he is referring to a painting by Theodor Kittelsen, who became famous for his landscapes and drawings of mythological subjects, primarily depictions of trolls. Specifically, it refers to the Sorija-Morija castle from a Norwegian fairy tale.
- The appearance of the trolls in the film was inspired by the works of Theodor Kittelsen and John Bauer. He was a Swedish artist and illustrator who gained wide recognition for his illustrations in the book series “Among Elves and Trolls” – an anthology of Swedish folklore and fairy tales published annually for Christmas.
