Short description
Zak, a young man with Down syndrome, has spent two and a half years in a retirement home where he was placed by the state. Determined to become a professional wrestler, he escapes one night and sets out for a wrestling school in rural North Carolina. Along the way he crosses paths with Tyler, a fisherman with troubles of his own, and the two become unlikely traveling companions. Eleanor, a caregiver from the home, goes after Zak, and a crab fisherman named Duncan also enters the chase. The three main travelers end up on a journey through the coastal South toward a meeting with Salt Water Redneck, the wrestler whose school Zak hopes to attend.
The film was directed and written by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, marking their feature debut. It stars Zack Gottsagen as Zak, Shia LaBeouf as Tyler and Dakota Johnson as Eleanor, with Thomas Haden Church, John Hawkes and Bruce Dern in supporting roles. Made for about six million dollars, it earned roughly twenty-four million worldwide, a strong return on its budget.
Audiences responded warmly: it holds 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 119,000 votes and 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB. A film critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 226 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Ben Foster was initially cast as Tyler, but he left the project at the last moment to spend more time with his wife, actress Laura Prepon, and their child. He called Shia LaBeouf himself and suggested he play Tyler, and LaBeouf agreed.
- In the scene where Zac, Tyler, and Eleanor jump from the oil platform, it was not stunt doubles, but the actors themselves who performed the jump.
- Directors Tyler Nilson and Mike Schwartz met Zac Gottsagen and learned that he dreamed of acting in films. They then wrote a screenplay about his dreams and aspirations, and used their connections to film it without obtaining the necessary permits.
- The film features two former professional wrestlers, Jake Roberts (real name Aurelian Smith Jr.) and Mick Foley, who performed in the ring under the names "Cactus Jack," "Mankind," and others.
