A Madea Family Funeral centers on a family gathering that goes wrong. Mabel "Madea" Simmons and her relatives come together expecting a celebration, but the occasion turns into a trip to rural Georgia where they end up arranging a funeral. The event threatens to expose long-hidden family secrets and stir up old tensions among the relatives. Tyler Perry wrote, directed and produced the film, and also plays several roles, including Madea, her brother Joe, Brian and Heathrow. Cassi Davis appears as Aunt Bam, Patrice Lovely as Hattie Mae Love, alongside Jen Harper, Derek Morgan and Courtney Burrell among a large credited cast.
The film is the sixteenth of the twenty-nine features Perry has directed in chronological order, following Nobody's Fool and preceding A Fall from Grace, and it was made by Tyler Perry Studios. Released in March 2019, it runs 109 minutes and belongs to the comedy genre. Its budget of 20 million dollars was modest by studio standards, and the worldwide gross of about 75 million dollars represents a strong return on that investment.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 4.8 from roughly 5,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 out of 10 from around 497 votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 from 35 reviews places it well below the audience scores reported on both platforms.
