A young mother kills her family inside her own home, and Detective Muldoon, a single parent herself, takes on the case. As she looks into what happened, she comes to believe the house is haunted by a vengeful presence that harms anyone who enters it. The danger soon turns toward Muldoon and her son, and she has to protect them both from the force tied to the house. The film is a horror mystery set in the United States and Canada, and it was released at the end of 2019.
Nicolas Pesce directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Buhler. It is the second of the three features he directed, following The Eyes of My Mother and preceding Piercing, both from the same period of his career. Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Takashige Ichise produced. Andrea Riseborough plays Detective Muldoon, with Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver among the cast. The production had a budget of 10 million USD and took in about 50 million USD worldwide.
Audience scores are low: on IMDb it holds 4.4/10 from over 28,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4/10 from more than 1,300 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.1/10 from 130 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement about the film's reception rather than a sharp split between reviewers and viewers.
