Cimarron is a Western set around the Oklahoma Land Rush of April 1889, when settlers rushed to claim land newly opened to them. Among them are Yancey "Cimarron" Cravat, an adventurous lawyer and newspaperman, and his wife Sabra, who comes from a well-off family. The couple settles in the new territory and founds a newspaper that grows into a substantial enterprise. Their life together is shaped by the lawlessness of the frontier, by conflicts with outlaws, and by Yancey's restless need to move on in search of new adventures, which repeatedly pulls him away from his wife and children. The story follows the family over the years as the region changes and fortunes rise, including through oil. It adapts Edna Ferber's novel, previously brought to the screen in 1931.
Anthony Mann directed, working from a screenplay by Arnold Schulman, with Edmund Grainger producing for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was Mann's seventeenth film as director in chronological order, arriving between Man of the West and El Cid. Glenn Ford and Maria Schell lead as the Cravats, alongside Anne Baxter, Arthur O'Connell, Russ Tamblyn and Mercedes McCambridge. The production cost about six million dollars and returned roughly eleven million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. On IMDb the film holds 6.4 out of 10 from about 3,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from 81 votes, suggesting limited but generally mild approval from those who have seen it.
