The Last Sunset

The Last Sunset is a 1961 American Western drama directed by Robert Aldrich from a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo. Fugitive gunslinger Brendan "Bren" O'Malley arrives at a Mexican ranch belonging to Belle Breckenridge, a woman from his past who is now married to an alcoholic rancher. A sheriff, Dana Stribling, is following O'Malley with personal reasons for wanting him brought to justice. The two men join the Breckenridge cattle drive toward Texas, where Stribling would have the legal authority to make an arrest. As the herd moves north, the journey brings danger and rising tension between the pursuer and the pursued, while O'Malley's interest turns toward Belle's daughter, Missy.

Aldrich made the film fifth among the seventeen features he directed, between Attack in 1956 and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? in 1962. Rock Hudson plays Stribling and Kirk Douglas plays O'Malley, with Dorothy Malone as Belle, Joseph Cotten as her husband John, and Carol Lynley as Missy. The production, backed by Universal International Pictures and Brynaprod S.A., had a budget of four million dollars.
