Black God, White Devil follows Manuel and Rosa, a poor couple in the arid sertão of northern Brazil. After Manuel kills his employer during a dispute and the pair flee, they fall under the sway of one intimidating figure after another, among them the preacher Sebastião and the bandit Corisco. Their search for a way out of hunger and persecution keeps drawing them into violence.
Glauber Rocha directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Walter Lima Jr. and Paulo Gil Soares. It was his second feature, and its cast includes Geraldo del Rey, Yoná Magalhães, Othon Bastos, Sonia dos Humildes, Maurício do Valle and Lídio Silva. The film is a Brazilian production running 120 minutes, mixing adventure, crime, drama and western elements.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 6,200 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 7.1, from a much smaller base of 168 votes. A critics' rating of 8.5 from 15 reviews is noticeably higher than those audience scores. The film was released in March 1964.
