Set in Ireland years after a virus turned much of the population into violent, zombie-like cannibals, The Cured begins at the point most such stories end. Doctors have developed a treatment, and roughly three quarters of those infected have been restored to themselves. The cured retain full memories of the atrocities they committed while ill, and society is deeply divided over whether they can be forgiven. Senan, a former leader among the infected, is released into the care of his widowed sister-in-law, the journalist Abbie, who lives with her young son. His presence stirs resentment in the community and conflict with Conor, an unrepentant cured man, while the doctor responsible for the treatment continues to search for a way to help those it could not save.
David Freyne wrote and directed this Irish production, his first feature, followed later by Dating Amber and Eternity. Elliot Page, also a producer here, plays Abbie, with Sam Keeley as Senan, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Conor, Stuart Graham as Cantor and Paula Malcomson as Dr. Lyons. The film runs 95 minutes across drama, horror and science fiction.
It found only a modest audience and mixed responses. On IMDb it holds 5.6/10 from around 10,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5/10 from 419 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.3/10 from 66 reviews, noticeably higher than the viewer scores.
