The summer holiday season has begun, and the gendarmes of Saint-Tropez are ordered to crack down on reckless drivers. During a traffic stop, warrant officer Ludovic Cruchot meets Josépha, the widow of a gendarmerie colonel, and falls for her at once. She encourages him to sit the examination for promotion, which puts him in direct competition with his superior, Gerber. Further trouble comes from Cruchot's grown daughter Nicole, who resents her father's new relationship, while a criminal with a grudge against Cruchot is also at large.
Jean Girault directed the film, the sixth of the thirteen features he made in chronological order, following The Exchange Student in 1967 and preceding The Gendarme Takes Off in 1970. Louis de Funès leads as Cruchot, with Jean Lefebvre, Geneviève Grad, Christian Marin, Yves Vincent and Guy Grosso among the credited cast of twenty-four. The production was handled by Gérard Beytout and René Pignières for Medusa Produzione and Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie.
Released in France on 30 October 1968 and running ninety minutes, the comedy holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 9,400 votes, and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from some 623 votes. Those scores, drawn from a considerably larger sample on IMDb, place the film as a solidly received entry in the series rather than an outstanding one.
