Stardom follows Tina Menzhal, a teenager from a small Canadian town who is spotted by a photographer and drawn into the modelling industry. She moves to larger cities and becomes a fixture of the fashion scene, with a high-profile photographer, a New York agent and a restaurant owner all taking an interest in her. As her fame grows, her private life becomes public property, and the media coverage that made her increasingly shapes how she is seen.
Denys Arcand directed the film, working from a screenplay he wrote with Jacob Potashnik. It sits between Gina (1975) and The Barbarian Invasions (2003) in his filmography. Jessica Paré plays Tina, with Dan Aykroyd, Charles Berling, Camilla Rutherford and Thomas Gibson among the cast; Robert Lepage appears as Bruce Taylor. Thirty-one performers are credited.
Released in October 2000, the Canadian-French production was made by Serendipity Point Films, Alliance Films, Ciné B and Cinémaginaire. On IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from around 1,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.4/10 from 33 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 24 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a mixed but not sharply divided response.
