Uncle Drew is a basketball comedy built around the title character, an elderly streetball legend played by NBA star Kyrie Irving. Dax Winslow, a coach who once missed a career-defining shot and has carried the disappointment since, sinks his savings into assembling a team for Harlem's Rucker Classic streetball tournament. When a longtime rival lures away his best player, Dax is left without a roster, until a chance meeting with Drew gives him another route into the competition. Drew agrees to play again, and the two set out to track down the members of his old squad and persuade them to reunite on the court.
The film was directed by Charles Stone III, whose earlier features include Drumline and Mr. 3000; it sits between those films and Step Sisters in his filmography. Jay Longino wrote the screenplay, and the cast mixes professional basketball figures with comedians, among them Lil Rel Howery as Dax, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller and Nate Robinson. It was a modestly budgeted production and performed well enough commercially, with a worldwide gross more than double its reported cost.
On IMDb, voters rate it 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 605 votes. The film critics' rating stands at 5.8 out of 10 from about 100 reviews, close to the IMDb figure and somewhat below the smaller TMDB sample.
