When Time Ran Out...

A luxury resort on a South Pacific volcanic island becomes the setting for a disaster when the long-dormant volcano shows signs of erupting. A drilling foreman, Hank Anderson, grows alarmed by underground pressure and sulfur readings while searching for oil, but the hotel's developer, Shelby Gilmore, refuses to evacuate his guests and risk his investment. Caught between them is Kay Kirby, a hotel executive and Hank's former love. As the mountain stirs, Hank works to convince the guests and staff that the danger is real before it is too late.

James Goldstone directed this 1980 American production, the fifth of his feature films after Winning, Brother John, Swashbuckler and Rollercoaster. Paul Newman stars as Hank, with Jacqueline Bisset as Kay, William Holden as Shelby Gilmore, James Franciscus as Bob Spangler and Ernest Borgnine in a supporting role. Irwin Allen produced from a screenplay by Carl Foreman and Stirling Silliphant.

Released in March 1980, the film had a budget of about 20 million dollars and returned roughly 4 million worldwide, a result far below its cost. Audiences have been unenthusiastic: on TMDB it holds a rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 86 votes. It arrived in cinemas between Goldstone's Rollercoaster and his 1981 television film Kent State.
