Ordet

Ordet is a Danish drama set in a rural Jutland farming community around 1930. Widower Morten Borgen heads the family farm and has three grown sons whose religious outlooks could hardly be more different. Mikkel, the eldest, has married Inger and they have two young daughters with a third child on the way, but he has lost the faith his father holds. Johannes, the middle son, studied theology, was deeply affected by the writings of Søren Kierkegaard and now believes he is Jesus Christ, wandering the countryside and prophesying. The youngest, Anders, wants to marry Anne, the daughter of the village tailor, whose strict religious views put him at odds with Morten.

Carl Theodor Dreyer directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced the film with Tage Nielsen and Erik Nielsen for Palladium. It was released in January 1955 and runs 125 minutes. It stands between Day of Wrath, made in 1943, and Gertrud, made in 1964, in Dreyer's small body of features, which also includes Michael, The Passion of Joan of Arc and Vampyr. The cast includes Henrik Malberg as Morten, Birgitte Federspiel as Inger, Emil Hass Christensen as Mikkel, Preben Lerdorff Rye as Johannes, Cay Kristiansen as Anders and Ejner Federspiel as Peter Petersen.

The film holds an IMDb rating of 8.2 from roughly 19,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 7.9 from 429 votes. A critics' rating of 9.8 from 29 reviews places it above both audience scores.
