Short description

Ten people who have never met are brought to an isolated island by an unknown host. While they wait for him to appear, a recording accuses each of them of a crime that went unpunished. When the guests begin dying one after another, the survivors realise the killer must be among them, and leaving the island proves impossible.

The film is an adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel of the same name. René Clair directed and produced it, working from a screenplay by Dudley Nichols. The cast includes Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston, Louis Hayward, Roland Young, June Duprez and Mischa Auer. Released in October 1945, it was Clair's first American production after a career that had begun with the 1924 short Entr'acte, and it stands between that early work and his 1960 film Love and the Frenchwoman.

The film drew a critics' rating of 8.1 out of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes, ahead of its audience scores of 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb and 7 out of 10 on TMDB. It earned about 1 million USD worldwide.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The copyright holder did not renew the rights to the film, so it entered the public domain, and anyone could make copies on DVD and VHS. As a result, many distorted copies of the film appeared on the market, and they were certainly not made from the original.
  • The ending here is quite different from the novel (1939), where all 10 characters perished. Agatha Christie (1890-1976) changed the ending for the theatrical production, deciding that the audience during wartime would find it too bleak.
