Tentacles is a 1977 horror and science fiction film set in a coastal town where people begin vanishing in and around the water. The bodies that turn up have been stripped to the bone, leaving investigators without an explanation. Suspicion falls on a construction company building an underwater tunnel, and the theory takes shape that the work has disturbed the sea in a way that produced a vastly enlarged octopus. A journalist working alongside the local sheriff, an oceanographer, and a trainer of killer whales becomes caught up in the search for what is taking the victims. The film was directed by Ovidio G. Assonitis, following his 1974 debut Beyond the Door, from a screenplay by Steven W. Carabatsos, Tito Carpi and Jerome Max, and produced by Enzo Doria as an Italian-American co-production between Esse Ci Cinematografica and American International Pictures.
The cast is led by John Huston as Ned Turner, with Shelley Winters as Tillie Turner, Bo Hopkins as Will Gleason, Henry Fonda as Mr. Whitehead, Delia Boccardo as Vicky Gleason and Cesare Danova as John Corey. The film's worldwide box office came to about 3 million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.8 out of 10 from around 5,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 123 votes, indicating a modest audience response.
