Jennifer Haines is a successful criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of David Greenhill, a man accused of murdering his wealthy wife. What begins as a professional challenge becomes something more unsettling as David, released on bail, works his way into Jennifer's private life and reveals a side of himself she did not expect. She comes to believe her client is guilty, yet she is bound to defend him.
Sidney Lumet directed the film, the twenty-first of the twenty-six features he made, following Q & A and preceding Night Falls on Manhattan. Larry Cohen wrote the screenplay, and Martin Ransohoff produced it for Hollywood Pictures. Rebecca De Mornay and Don Johnson lead the cast as Jennifer and David, with Stephen Lang, Jack Warden, Dana Ivey and Ron White in supporting roles; thirty-five performers are credited in all.
Released in June 1993, the film runs 107 minutes and cost about 12 million dollars, earning roughly 23 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 6,300 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.7, from 152 votes, so audiences are closely aligned. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 16 reviews places professional assessment slightly below those audience scores.
