Madigan

Madigan is a crime drama set in New York City, where two veteran detectives, Daniel Madigan and Rocco Bonaro, handle some of the department's roughest street assignments. When a routine operation goes wrong and a wanted fugitive, Barney Benesch, escapes after taking their guns, their furious superiors give them seventy-two hours to track him down. As the two men chase leads across the city, Police Commissioner Anthony X. Russell carries on with the wider demands of his job, from public appearances to meetings with grieving families and the spouses of officers killed in the line of duty. Madigan's wife Julia becomes increasingly worried about the danger of his work.

Don Siegel directed the film, the tenth of the nineteen features listed in his filmography, arriving between Coogan's Bluff and Death of a Gunfighter. Howard Rodman and Abraham Polonsky wrote the screenplay, and Frank P. Rosenberg produced it for Universal Pictures. Richard Widmark plays Madigan opposite Henry Fonda as Commissioner Russell, with Inger Stevens, Harry Guardino, James Whitmore and Susan Clark among the large credited cast.
