Adam Lawrence is a Rolling Stone reporter in 1980s California, working on a story about health clubs and the singles scene that has grown up around them. While researching at a fashionable Los Angeles gym, he meets aerobics instructor Jessie Wilson, a former Olympic swimmer whose past experience with the press has left her wary of journalists. A relationship develops between them, but Adam's professional obligations and the article he is writing place the two of them on a collision course.

James Bridges directed and produced the film, and wrote the screenplay with Aaron Latham. It followed his The China Syndrome and Urban Cowboy and preceded Bright Lights, Big City. John Travolta stars as Adam opposite Jamie Lee Curtis as Jessie, with Anne DeSalvo, Marilu Henner, Laraine Newman and Mathew Reed among a credited cast of 84. The production had a budget of 19 million dollars and returned roughly 13 million worldwide, so it did not recover its costs at the box office.

Critical response was poor: the film critics' rating stands at 3.6 out of 10 from 17 reviews, while audiences on TMDB give it 5.6 out of 10 from 207 votes, a milder but still negative verdict. The gap suggests critics were considerably harsher than viewers, though neither group received the film warmly.
