Short description
A young writer named James Frey wakes up on a plane to Chicago with no memory of how he got there or what happened to him. His drug and alcohol use has brought him close to collapse, and he is checked into a rehabilitation clinic in Minnesota, where he begins two months of painful detox. There he forms relationships with the other patients, among them a mafia boss and a young woman he is drawn to despite the clinic's rules.
The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, working from a screenplay she wrote with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It is her fourth feature, following Destricted, Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Grey. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays James, with Billy Bob Thornton as Leonard, Odessa Young as Lilly, and Giovanni Ribisi, Juliette Lewis and Dash Mihok in supporting roles. The production involved 22 credited cast members and 105 credited crew.
Released in 2019, the drama runs 113 minutes. On IMDb its critics' rating stands at 5 out of 10 from 49 reviews, while on TMDB it holds 6.2 out of 10 from 117 votes, indicating a somewhat warmer response from audiences than from professional reviewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- The novel was owned by the film company “Warner Bros.” for four years, after which it was bought out by screenwriters Aaron and Sam Taylor-Johnson. It soon became known that the author of the novel, James Frey, had invented some of the plot elements that were initially presented as memoirs. In 2006, Frey publicly admitted that it was not a memoir, but a fictional story. At that time, television personality and media figure Oprah Winfrey was one of Frey's most ardent fans. In January 2006, she publicly spoke out against Frey for passing off fiction as truth and profiting from it.
- After the book, which formed the basis of the plot, was released, the film company “Warner Bros.” planned to film an adaptation with Orlando Bloom and Josh Hartnett.
