The Devil All the Time

The Devil All the Time is set in and around Knockemstiff, Ohio, and the surrounding rural backwoods, following a group of troubled characters across the years from the end of the Second World War into the 1960s. At the center is Arvin Russell, a young man who grows up surrounded by violence and religious fervour. His father, Willard, is a desperate man watching his wife waste away, and his attempts to pray for her recovery take a dark turn. As Arvin gets older, he finds himself facing a corrupt sheriff, a preacher with bad intentions and a murderous couple, all while trying to protect himself and what remains of his family.

Antonio Campos directed and co-wrote the film with Paulo Campos, adapting Donald Ray Pollock's novel. It is Campos's fourth feature, following Afterschool, Simon Killer and Christine. Tom Holland plays Arvin, with Bill Skarsgård as Willard, Robert Pattinson as Reverend Preston Teagardin, Riley Keough and Jason Clarke as Sandy and Carl Henderson, and Sebastian Stan as Deputy Lee Bodecker. Jake Gyllenhaal was among the producers. The production involved 76 credited cast members and 73 credited crew.

The film runs 138 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 168,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.2 from roughly 3,780 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.4 from 219 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores, suggesting viewers responded to it more warmly than reviewers did.
