Short description
In 1934, Frank Hamer and Manny Gault, two former Texas Rangers, are commissioned to put an end to the wave of vicious crimes perpetrated by Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, a notorious duo of infamous robbers and cold-blooded killers who nevertheless are worshiped by the public.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the film was conceived as a joint project by Robert Redford and Paul Newman (1925-2008), but Redford lost interest in the project after Newman's death.
  • Screenwriter John Fusco worked for some time with Frank Hamer Jr., the son of the late Texas Ranger Frank Hamer.
  • Ten years ago, Kevin Costner was already offered the role of Frank Hamer, but he declined, believing himself to be too young to convincingly portray a veteran ranger who had returned from retirement to service. This time, he felt better suited for the role, but still decided to gain almost 7 kilograms for filming.
  • When Bonnie Parker (1910-1934, played here by Emily Brobst) limps away from the car at the beginning of the film, the filmmakers were not mistaken, as she was involved in an accident when the car went off a bridge into the bed of a dry river, and battery acid splashed onto Bonnie's left leg. After that, she limped for the rest of her life.
  • A commitment to historical accuracy prompted director John Lee Hancock to recreate the ambush/death scene in the same location in Louisiana where it actually happened on Wednesday, May 23, 1934.
