Serafino is a young shepherd who has always lived freely in the mountains with his flock, content with simple pleasures and the company of women. His life changes when an inheritance from his aunt leaves him a substantial fortune. Rather than safeguarding it, he begins giving money and gifts away to friends and neighbours, which provokes the resentment of his family. His uncle Agenore has him declared mentally unfit and takes control of his affairs, while his cousin Lidia is pushed toward marrying him. Serafino, however, proves difficult to manage.
The film is a comedy directed by Pietro Germi, released in December 1968. It sits between Divorce Italian Style, his 1961 success, and Alfredo, Alfredo from 1972, in a career that began with Mademoiselle Gobete in 1952 and The Railroad Man in 1956. The screenplay is by Leonardo Benvenuti, Piero De Bernardi and Tullio Pinelli, and Angelo Rizzoli produced. Adriano Celentano plays Serafino, with Ottavia Piccolo as Lidia, Saro Urzì as uncle Agenore and Francesca Romana Coluzzi as Asmara. Twenty-four performers are credited. On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from 86 votes, a modest but steady response from viewers.
