Short description
Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi are brothers who have just started their own business. While repairing a water main underground, they are pulled through a mysterious pipe into a magical world. When the two are separated, Mario sets out to find Luigi, aided by Toad, a resident of the Mushroom Kingdom, and trained in combat by Princess Peach, the kingdom's determined ruler. A fire-breathing monster named Bowser threatens the world.
The animated adventure was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, following Horvath's earlier Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and preceding both filmmakers' work on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay, and Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto produced for Universal Pictures, Illumination and Nintendo. The English voice cast is led by Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, with 39 credited cast members and 276 credited crew.
Made for about 100 million dollars, the film took roughly 1.36 billion dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from 285,000 votes, while on TMDB it rates 7.6 out of 10 from 11,149 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 288 reviews sits below both audience scores. The film runs 93 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the prologue, Bowser invades the Snow Kingdom, defeating the Penguin King and his army to obtain a Super Star. The Penguin King is a character created specifically for the film and has never appeared in a "Super Mario" game before.
- The French restaurant "Chasse du Canard," which can be seen in some scenes in Brooklyn, translates to "Duck Hunt." This is another Nintendo game – "Duck Hunt" (1984), which was often bundled with "Super Mario Bros." (1985). The restaurant's logo is the duck from the game.
- The arcade machine in the pizzeria at the beginning of the film is called "Jump Man." The character Mario was originally known as "Jumpman" when he first appeared in the game Donkey Kong (1981). The character's name was changed to Mario in honor of Mario Segale, the owner of the warehouse Nintendo America rented.
- The images of Mario and Luigi’s parents and relatives were based on character designs that were not used in the creation of the games.
- When Luigi's phone rings, the ringtone is the startup sound of the Nintendo GameCube console. The caller ID icon resembles a Mii avatar.
- One of the guards at Princess Peach's castle says that "the princess is in another castle." This is a reference to the original 1985 game, where upon completing a level, the phrase "Thank you, Mario, but the princess is in another castle" is heard.
- The music playing in the promotional video for Mario and Luigi's services is actually the theme song from the 1989 children's show "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!"
- The Super Mario Bros. logo on the van was also used in the original 1985 game. The images of the brothers on the van are old advertising images of these characters from the time the game was released.
