Summertime

Summertime follows Jane Hudson, a middle-aged secretary from Ohio who has never married and has largely accepted a life on her own. She uses her savings to spend a summer in Venice, hoping to gather memories to last a lifetime. The city's romantic atmosphere sharpens her sense of loneliness until she meets Renato de Rossi, an antiques dealer who takes an interest in her. What begins as a holiday acquaintance develops into a relationship that gives her stay in Venice a different meaning. Katharine Hepburn plays Jane, with Rossano Brazzi as Renato; Isa Miranda, Darren McGavin, Mari Aldon and Jane Rose appear in supporting roles.

David Lean directed and co-wrote the film with H. E. Bates, and Ilya Lopert produced it. It came after Lean's Hobson's Choice (1954) and before The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), in the stretch of his career that followed his Dickens adaptations and Brief Encounter. Made for about 1 million dollars, it returned roughly 7 million worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7/10 from a much smaller base of 173 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 25 reviews places it above both audience scores.
