Monster is a crime drama based on the true story of Aileen Wuornos, a woman surviving on the margins in Florida who has spent years working as a prostitute. One night, at a low point and close to giving up, she meets Selby Wall in a bar, and the two begin a relationship that gives Aileen a reason to keep going. Selby has been sent by her parents to live with an aunt in the hope of changing her sexuality. Wanting to leave the street behind but unable to find steady work, Aileen keeps taking clients, and when one of them turns violent she kills him. That killing sets off a chain of further crimes, and the media come to label her the country's first female serial killer.
The film was directed by Patty Jenkins, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was her first feature; her later films are Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. Charlize Theron plays Aileen, with Christina Ricci as Selby, and Bruce Dern, Lee Tergesen, Annie Corley and Pruitt Taylor Vince among the supporting cast. Made for about 8 million dollars, it took roughly 60 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 172,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from about 2,630. The critics' rating stands at 7.3 from 189 reviews, so audiences and critics are closely aligned on the film.
