Walter Black, the head of a toy company, has been in severe depression for a long time. Neither medication nor therapy nor drink has helped, his business is failing and his marriage is coming apart. After his wife Meredith throws him out of the house for the sake of their two sons, he finds a beaver hand puppet in a rubbish container and begins to speak through it, at first using it to say the things he cannot say himself. The puppet gradually takes over as the voice of a more confident Walter, mending his relationship with his younger son and even improving the fortunes of his company, while the older son, Porter, struggles with his father's strange behaviour. Walter's dependence on the beaver grows until he can no longer function without it.
Jodie Foster directed the film, the third of the four features she has directed, following Little Man Tate and Home for the Holidays. Kyle Killen wrote the screenplay, and Mel Gibson plays Walter, with Foster as Meredith and Anton Yelchin as Porter. Jennifer Lawrence appears as Norah. The production had a budget of around 21 million dollars.
It is a drama running 91 minutes, made with companies including Summit Entertainment, Participant and Anonymous Content. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 954 votes, which suggests a modest rather than enthusiastic response from viewers.
