The Good Liar

Roy Courtnay is a career swindler who believes he has found an easy target: Betty McLeish, a wealthy widow he meets online. She welcomes him into her home and her life, and his plan is to take everything she has. What begins as a routine con becomes harder to carry through as genuine feelings develop between them, turning the scheme into the riskiest undertaking of Roy's life.

Bill Condon directed the film, his tenth, from a screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher. Helen Mirren plays Betty and Ian McKellen plays Roy, marking the first time the two actors appear together on screen. Russell Tovey, Jim Carter, Mark Lewis Jones and Laurie Davidson round out the cast. The film was released in November 2019 and runs 109 minutes.

Made for about 10 million dollars, the crime drama earned roughly 34 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 54,000 votes, and on TMDB it also scores 6.7 out of 10, from a smaller base of about 1,300 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 166 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
