Backtrace is a crime thriller about the only man who survives a botched armored car robbery. Suffering from memory loss after a head injury, MacDonald has spent years in the psychiatric wing of a prison, unaware of the crimes that put him there. When a fellow inmate and a doctor arrange his release, they inject him with an experimental drug intended to unlock the memories buried in his mind, hoping he will lead them to the stolen money. A detective follows the trail as MacDonald relives fragments of his past.
The film is directed by Brian A. Miller, his sixth feature following Officer Down, The Prince, Vice and The Outsider. Matthew Modine plays MacDonald, with Sylvester Stallone as Sykes, Ryan Guzman as Lucas, Meadow Williams as Erin, Christopher McDonald as Franks and Colin Egglesfield as Carter. Mike Maples wrote the screenplay, and George Furla, Randall Emmett and Matt Luber produced. It runs 92 minutes.
Released in December 2018, the film drew weak numbers across the board. On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.8 from around 5,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5 out of 10 from roughly 258 votes. A critics' rating of 2.1 from 11 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores, indicating a generally poor reception.
