Short description
Roy Pulver, a former special forces operator, wakes each morning to the same ordeal: a series of assassins come for him, and no matter how he fights back, he dies and the day begins again. Convinced there is a reason behind the loop, he starts looking into a secret government project and the people running it, including Colonel Clive Ventor. His search also draws in his ex-wife and their son, whose safety becomes part of what is at stake.
Boss Level was directed by Joe Carnahan, who wrote the screenplay with Eddie Borey and Chris Borey, and produced it with George Furla and Randall Emmett. It is the sixth of the ten features Carnahan directed in the order listed, arriving between Stretch and Copshop. Frank Grillo plays Roy, with Mel Gibson as Ventor, Naomi Watts as Jemma Wells, Will Sasso, Annabelle Wallis and Sheaun McKinney in supporting roles; 57 cast members and 94 crew members are credited.
The film was released in February 2021 and runs 101 minutes. Against a budget of about 45 million US dollars, it took in roughly 2 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from 76,881 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from 2,013 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.5/10 from 87 reviews, placing the two audience scores slightly above the critical one.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of an action scene, Mel Gibson accidentally hit Frank Grillo in the face with such force that it dislocated his jaw. Grillo didn't tell anyone to avoid interrupting the filming process, and his jaw wasn't reset for 8 hours after the impact.
- Joe Carnahan tried to make this film for many years. In 2010, the future film was titled “Continue,” and the screenplay was written by Chris and Eddie Borry. Carnahan rewrote the script and announced that he would be filming the movie for 20th Century Fox. He even shot several test scenes with Frank Grillo, but the studio abandoned the project, allegedly due to Carnahan’s decision to cast Grillo in the lead role. Carnahan later posted the filmed scenes on Twitter.
