Hatching

Twelve-year-old Tinja is a competitive gymnast who works constantly to satisfy her mother, a former figure skater who now runs a blog devoted to presenting her family as flawless. When Tinja brings home an odd egg she finds in the woods and secretly tends it, a creature emerges that becomes both a companion and a threat, unsettling the carefully maintained image her mother refuses to abandon. The Finnish-language film blends drama, fantasy and horror.

Hatching is the feature debut of director Hanna Bergholm, who followed it with Nightborn in 2026. Ilja Rautsi wrote the screenplay, and Nima Yousefi and Mika and Niko Ritalahti produced the Belgian, Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish co-production on a budget of about 4 million dollars. Siiri Solalinna plays Tinja, with Sophia Heikkilä as the mother, Jani Volanen as the father, Reino Nordin as Tero, Oiva Ollila as Matias and Ida Määttänen as Reetta. It runs 87 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from over 500 votes, indicating a generally moderate audience response. Critics were more favourable, giving it 7.3 out of 10 across 134 reviews.
