The Glorias is a drama about Gloria Steinem, the journalist and activist who became a leading voice in the American women's movement. The film traces her life from her childhood through her travels in India, her work as a journalist in the 1960s, and her rise as a public figure for equal rights, including her role at the 1977 National Women's Conference. It follows her efforts to listen to and connect with people across the United States and abroad, and how those experiences shaped her involvement in a movement that changed modern history. Four actresses portray Steinem at different stages of her life: Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a child, Lulu Wilson as a teenager, Alicia Vikander as a young woman, and Julianne Moore as the adult Steinem. Timothy Hutton plays her father, Leo Steinem, and Janelle Monáe appears as activist Dorothy Pitman Hughes.
Julie Taymor directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Sarah Ruhl. It is the fifth feature she directed, following Titus, Frida, Across the Universe and The Tempest. The production involved a large credited cast of 94 and a crew of 42 across several production companies, including LD Entertainment, Roadside Attractions, Artemis Rising and Page Fifty-Four Pictures.
Released in December 2020, the film runs 147 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 4,200 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.5 from 65 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.2 from 138 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both platforms.
