Love Streams centers on Robert Harmon, a successful writer whose chaotic personal life is defined by heavy drinking and casual relationships. His routine is interrupted when his young son arrives for a stay and, unsettled by his father's household, soon wants to return to his mother. Not long afterward Robert's sister Sarah, who is struggling after a divorce and her daughter's decision to live with her father, moves into his home. The two siblings, each emotionally damaged, try to find stability through one another.
John Cassavetes directed and stars as Robert, with Gena Rowlands as Sarah. The screenplay was written by Ted Allan and Cassavetes, and the film was produced by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. It was Cassavetes's sixth feature as director, arriving between Gloria and Big Trouble in his filmography. The credited cast runs to 71 performers, among them Diahnne Abbott, Seymour Cassel and Jakob Shaw.
Released in 1984, the film runs 141 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from around 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from roughly 150 votes, indicating a well-regarded title with a relatively modest audience footprint. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 19 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
